What Effects Does Daily Consumption of Flaxseed Have on our Health?

Flaxseeds have undergone many scientific studies to determine if their health benefits can be used for medicinal purposes. It’s no question that their nutritional content: omega-3 fatty acid, alpha linolenic acid, and fiber are profound, but what effect can daily consumption have on our health? The most studied aspect of flaxseed is of the beneficial anti-inflammatory properties, anti-oxidative properties, and lipid modulating properties obtained through average consumption. These properties help prevent and treat diseases such as: cardiovascular diseases, cancer, gastro-intestinal health and brain development and function, as well as hormonal status in menopausal women.

Treatment of Disease

  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Daily consumption of flaxseed was shown to regress atherosclerosis in patients. It also helps to decrease the incidents of stroke or heart attacks, and decrease both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with peripheral arterial disease. Heart health has been the most studied disease when it comes to the effects of flaxseed.

  • Diabetes
  • In patients who have been diagnosed with prediabetes, the addition of flaxseeds to their diet can positively affect their condition! In this study it was found that patients who incorporated a regular intake of flax had lowered their blood glucose levels. Also, in patients who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, flax also reduced blood glucose levels.

  • Cancers
  • Flaxseeds are not limited to benefiting one type of cancer, they have been shown to help fight against prostate, lung, colon, ovarian, breast, and cervical cancers. Due to the anti-oxidative properties and rich compositions of both secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) and  alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), flaxseed works to inhibit the effects of these cancer cells.

  • Brain Health
  • Omega-3 fatty acids and  eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are some of many things that our brain needs. They help improve brain development, improve memory, and enhance our mood.

  • Skin Health
  • Say goodbye to skin care products and welcome to flaxseeds! Daily consumption of flax has been reported to decrease skin sensitivity, transepidermal water loss, skin roughness and scaling, with an increase in skin hydration and smoothness. It has also been shown to exert a healthy effect on aging.

  • Gut Health
  • It’s no question fiber is important, it keeps our gut healthy and bowel movements regular. Flaxseed consumption was studied on people who suffer from constipation, and was shown to replace or reduce the use of constipation medication. It is being further researched in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.
